Canadian Corporate Designers Stand Out
RGD announces recipients of inaugural awards program showcasing the best design being done in-house.

TORONTO (Dec. 2, 2016) - The Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) has put a spotlight on the thoughtful, visually stunning and inventive creative communications being produced by designers working within in-house corporate departments.

In recent years, there has been an influx of graphic designers departing the agency world in favour of employment within companies, government and organizations. In 2013, nearly 60% of clients were using in-house marketing capabilities.

Despite this growth, “there is a perception that our time is less valuable than an agency’s,” explains award entrant Dan D'Alessio Prov. RGD. “The quality of the briefs, information and scope of work tends to be less formal." Adds entrant Wendy Millard RGD: "It is a challenge to prove that our team is as capable and creative as an external vendor.” The In-House Design Awards program provides a unique outlet for internal creatives to showcase their skill and value.


Judges selected 40 projects from over 240 submissions, and the calibre of winning work is a true testament to the diverse skill of today’s in-house designers. Awarded projects include: WestJet’s Frozen-themed aircraft; Sun Life’s agile workspace café; the National Gallery of Canada’s Sakahan exhibit; the TVOKids rebrand; York Region’s ‘I Am Different Like You’ campaign; and the LCBO’s Growler packaging design.

Our esteemed panel of 20 international judges included: Ashleigh Axios, former Creative Director at the White House Office of Digital Strategy; Patrice Boudreault, Creative Lead at Cirque du Soleil; Matt Coyle RGD, Creative Director at Maple Leaf Sports + Entertainment; and Mike Kruzeniski, Senior Director of Design at Twitter.


The second annual In-House Design Awards Call for Entries will launch in May. Bruce Power, one of the 2016 Award-winners, has confirmed as our 2017 Design Partner.
