During a recent RGD Webinar, "What Creative Directors Know," four Creative Directors shared what they've learned.

 

Give your team a roadmap for success.

"Teams look to their Creative Director to lead them to "amazing," whatever amazing means. An effective Creative Director will paint a picture of what success looks like for the team and the client."

Success isn't sweet if you aren't humble about it.

"There's being involved in great work, and there's being a jerk about it. It wasn't just you. There's a huge team of people behind the work, and the people who aren't humble are the ones that don't go very far; they rub people the wrong way and people don't want to work with them."

Passion projects can be most projects.

"Never stop thinking of your projects as a problem you have to solve. At the end of the day, we're all passionate problem-solvers at our best."

Recognize that failure and vulnerability are part of the process.

"A lot of being a designer is about the ability to fall and then get back up again."

Being busy is inevitable — instead of scaling back, be present.

"When the title comes, you should already be doing the job. So if you have aspirations to be a Creative Director, start to think about how you can bring those aspects of being a Creative Director into your job no matter what your title."
