Grace Hwang

Creating Connection: the Power of Design to Bring People Together

 

Grace is Partner Director of Mixed Reality Design & UX Research at Microsoft. She believes in the power of human-centered design to cultivate positive change in people, systems and society. Prior to joining Microsoft, Grace led Product and Marketing Design at Carrot, a digital health start-up focused on empowering people to take control of their health. Grace's passion for health and well-being was fueled over the course of her 12-year tenure at design and innovation firm, IDEO, where she was most recently the Executive Director of Health and co-led the Food & Beverage practice. She holds multiple patents and was awarded a Fast Company Innovation By Design Award for her work on the patient and employee experience for Planned Parenthood. In addition to her professional work, Grace has been dedicated to educating the next generation of creative problem solvers by teaching design thinking to students of engineering, business, psychology and medicine at Stanford D-school.

 

In this talk, Grace brings her experience and insight from designing for health and well-being and her journey into mixed reality to share the possibilities for design to grow our sense of togetherness.

Alice Rawsthorn

Design Emergency

 

Alice is an award-winning design critic and author, whose books include Hello World: Where Design Meets Life and, most recently, Design as an Attitude. Her weekly design column for The New York Times was syndicated worldwide for over a decade. An influential public speaker and social media commentator on design, Alice has participated in important global events including TED and the annual meetings of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Alice has been awarded an OBE for services to design and the arts. She is a co-founder with Paola Antonelli of the Design Emergency project to investigate design’s response to the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath. 

 

In this talk, Alice explores the successes, failures and long-term impact of design’s response to the pandemic and its aftermath.

Sara Wachter-Boettcher

Brave Conversations

 

Sara is the founder of Active Voice, a coaching and training company helping organizations build radical, courageous leadership practices. She also runs Strong Feelings, the podcast for feminists at work and Collective Strength, a feminist leadership event series based in Philly. Her most recent book, Technically Wrong: Sexist Apps, Biased Algorithms and Other Threats of Toxic Tech was named one of the best tech books of the year by Wired and one of the top business books of the year by Fast Company. Sara is also the co-author, with Eric Meyer, of Design for Real Life and the author of Content Everywhere. Her work has been published in The Washington Post, Slate, The Guardian, Salon, McSweeney’s and more. 
 
In this talk, Sara shares how to face challenging conversations with honesty, kindness and accountability.
