DDB has signed on to develop the branding for the RGD's annual DesignThinkers Conference, taking place in-person in Vancouver from May 31 to June 1 and in Toronto in the Fall.
Canada's largest conference for the communication design industry, DesignThinkers brings together visionaries from a range of disciplines to explore creativity, the design process and the future of design and design thinking.
"I saw the opportunity to work on DesignThinkers as a creative challenge for our diverse team. Our design crew is integrated within an agency creative team—with collaboration between graphic designers, art directors and copywriters," says Howard Poon RGD, Vice President of Design at DDB. "Finding a relevant truth to build the creative platform around has been the most challenging aspect of the project. We’re creating a theme for a national conference with a 22-year track record. The bar is high."
The project kicked off with a creative briefing in June 2021. Team members from DDB
presented concepts and mood boards to Howard and DDB
’s Creative Director, Eva Polis. After the presentations, each team member voted for their favourite concept. Two concepts were shortlisted for further refinement and presentation to the RGD Design Committee in September 2021.
"To develop the theme, we asked ourselves why designers engage in professional development, and what differentiates the RGD's DesignThinkers
from other design conferences," explains Howard. "The notion of getting uncomfortable, breaking the rules and taking more risks was a common thread in many of our concepts. The idea of defiance —expressed in a fresh way — became the foundation and call to action for our final concept."
The 2022 DesignThinkers branding will be revealed at the 2021 Conference
taking place November 8 to 19.
