• Education vs. Learning

The fourth Design Educators Conference gathered renowned national and international design scholars from around the world to explore the connections and disconnects of education with the goal to stimulate learning. Conference proceedings from a specially selected group of speakers have been curated and published in the form of a PDF.

As students and technology evolve, how is education changing to meet the needs of the new learner? What technologies or techniques will encourage learning? Where are the pain points for educators and learners? The 2016 Design Educators Conference seeks to explore the connections and disconnects of education with the goal to stimulate learning.

Presenters shared new models of collaboration taking form at the intersection between academia and real world projects. Design practitioners and scholars investigated the following questions:

    • As students and technology evolve, how is education changing to meet the needs of the new learner?
    • What technologies or techniques will encourage learning?
    • Where are the pain points for educators and learners?

In partnership with George Brown College, RGD welcomed educators from around the world to discuss the future of design education for our 3rd annual Design Educators Conference on November 5, 2015.

The Conference theme, transformation, considered how design and design education are transformative processes, and how design education itself is in a state of continual transformation.

"RGD's Design Educators Conference is an important opportunity to reflect on design pedagogy for people who are usually focused on the classroom," explains Elise Hodson, Chair, School of Design at George Brown College, and one of the conference organizers. "That many of the 2015 participants travelled from around the world to attend, then devoted time to write up their presentations and to support their peers by providing feedback on these papers, is indicative of the interest in this topic and the desire to keep the conversation going."

Essays by many of the Design Educators who presented at the Conference are now available to download!
