Panel: Elevating Black Design Voices

This webinar panel was an open and honest conversation with Black designers in Canada.

Discussions included what it means to be a Black designer and why there are so few. Panelists discussed their experiences in the Canadian design industry and why it’s important to talk about racism within it.

Moderator:

Angela Bains, Strategy Director at TransformExp

Angela runs TransformEXp with her husband, Chas. Both from the UK and each with over 30 years of experience in the design industry, they are strategic innovators who believe in always striving to engage people to love, buy and share their clients' products and services. Angela has taught in the Digital Arts Program at BCIT and nominated for seven local and national teaching awards of excellence in Canada. Angela is currently also an Associate Professor at OCAD University where she teaches in the Advertising undergraduate program and the graduate program, Strategic Foresight & Innovation.

Brian Dodo RGD, Founding Partner of BmDodo Strategic Design

Brian is a designer, entrepreneur and founding partner of BmDodo Strategic Design, a strategic design company with global reach based in Kingston Ontario and CEO/Founder of MAPP Africa Inc. MAPP Africa is a platform focused on showcasing the Music, Art, People and Places (M.A.P.P.) of Africa. It focuses on promoting a positive Africa, creating connections and celebrating cultures. One of MAPP Africa’s key objectives is to help Africa build its capacity and resilience. They develop projects, and identify clean technologies that help African countries achieve their Sustainable Development Goals.

Ashley Tomlinson Prov. RGD

Ashley is a multidisciplinary graphic designer based in Toronto, Canada. She received an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design from Humber College in 2019. Recently, she was the junior designer at Studio Wyse where she worked on editorial projects for the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, and the Creative Destruction Lab. Ashley is always up for a conversation; her favourite topics include magazines, dogs, books and Lizzo.

David Nuff RGD, Principal at Nuff

David designs brand identities, apps, interactive installations and murals. His commercial clients include the Royal Conservatory, Nestlé and the Museum of Jewish Montreal. His artistic practice has produced work for Ontario Place, Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, Ontario Science Centre and Artist Project. He lives in Toronto with thirty-one houseplants.
