Presented by Samuel Proulx. Moderated by Magued Hanna RGD.
“Just add alt-text” is the sum total of the advice many designers get when it comes to making graphics and other visual elements accessible. In this presentation, we’ll go beyond that, and take a deep dive into making your visual designs accessible to everyone. What should the alt-text actually say? How should it be written? When should it be left out entirely? When is alt-text not good enough, and other techniques should be used instead? This presentation will cover all of these questions, as well as introduce designers to other ways to make visual material more accessible. These techniques include data sonification, alternative formats and representations, accessible charts, long descriptions and other ways to make your infographics, word clouds and other interactive and complex visuals work for everyone.
