Future By Design: Inclusivity/AI/Type
Date: April 24, 2018, 6:00 - 8:00pm EST
Topic: The Future of Design
Future By Design is a series of webcast discussions featuring experts sharing their thoughts on the past, present and future trends in the design industry. As a virtual event, we invite cities across Canada to host local screening venues where members of the community can gather to watch live presentations, interact with our speakers and conduct group discussions.
Michelle Cortese, VR Product Designer at Facebook
Michelle is a Toronto-born designer, maker, futurist and typophile currently living bicoastally in Brooklyn and San Francisco. By day, she's a VR Product Designer at Facebook, leading design on 360 and 3D products; and by night, an adjunct at Queens College, teaching Advanced 3D Design. Her background is a twisted medley of interface design, art direction, hardware design and VR. Michelle was previously a Design Technologist at Refinery29 and an Experiential Art Director at The New York Times' Fake Love.
Talk: Future Type
Michelle provides a history of typography and communication design as a means to inspire thought when designing for the future of UI. She looks at how, historically, inventions in human communication have altered audience size, how this affects how we communicate and how we design communication tools.

Talk: If You Can’t Beat the Evil Robots, Join Them
When it comes to the future of design and commoditization of design, it’s not so much about overcoming the challenges as it is leveraging them. Artificial Intelligence is coming sooner than we realize and, despite our sense that creativity is somehow protected from the profound effects of our new algorithm-driven world, it will mean dramatic changes for our industry. Paddy looks at how designers can lead that revolution instead of succumbing to the tech entrepreneurs who may be in a better position to do so.
