Presenters:

Michelle Cortese, VR Product Designer at Facebook

Michelle is a Toronto-born designer, maker, futurist and typophile currently living bicoastally in Brooklyn and San Francisco. By day, she's a VR Product Designer at Facebook, leading design on 360 and 3D products; and by night, an adjunct at Queens College, teaching Advanced 3D Design. Her background is a twisted medley of interface design, art direction, hardware design and VR. Michelle was previously a Design Technologist at Refinery29 and an Experiential Art Director at The New York Times' Fake Love.

Talk: Future Type

Michelle provides a history of typography and communication design as a means to inspire thought when designing for the future of UI. She looks at how, historically, inventions in human communication have altered audience size, how this affects how we communicate and how we design communication tools.

Lara McCormick, Creative Director at the Exploratoium

Lara is a nationally recognized designer and educator, and currently Creative Director at the Exploratoium in San Francisco, CA. She is the author of ‘Playing with Type: 50 Graphic Experiments for Exploring Typographic Design Principles’ published by Rockport Press. Lara is a gifted speaker and gives presentations and workshops on design and typography across North America for organizations including AIGA, AdobeMAX and TEDx. Her work has been featured in notable design publications including HOW magazine, PRINT, Graphic Design USA, DesignObserver.com and highlighted in numerous graphic design books. She is a two-time recipient of the prestigious Sappi‘Ideas that Matter’ award and a judge for Communication Arts Typography Annual in 2017.

Talk: Inclusivity: Design has the Power to Inform

Inclusivity is "an intention or policy of including people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized.” As designers we can (and should) address inclusivity in the work we put out in the world. From imagery to language to process, Lara will show you what she is doing.

Paddy Harrington RGD, Founder of Frontier

Paddy has over more than 10 years experience in branding, strategy and design. He has degrees in literature and architecture and has worked in research, architecture, advertising, and design. His clients have included The New York Jets and Giants, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Unilever, the Holy City of Mecca and the Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland. He is an award-winning writer and filmmaker and has spoken at several design conferences as well as at Brown, Harvard, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Paddy was formerly the SVP Design Innovation and Digital Creative Director at Indigo Books and, prior to that, Executive Creative Director at Bruce Mau Design.

Talk: If You Can’t Beat the Evil Robots, Join Them

When it comes to the future of design and commoditization of design, it’s not so much about overcoming the challenges as it is leveraging them. Artificial Intelligence is coming sooner than we realize and, despite our sense that creativity is somehow protected from the profound effects of our new algorithm-driven world, it will mean dramatic changes for our industry. Paddy looks at how designers can lead that revolution instead of succumbing to the tech entrepreneurs who may be in a better position to do so.
