As designers, it used to be enough to design something useful, beautiful and well-crafted. But when designing at a global scale, the stakes are much higher. We must broaden our view of a designer’s professional responsibilities if we are to innovate responsibly. In this talk, Margaret Gould Stewart, Facebook's VP of Product Design & Responsible Innovation, will explore some of the things she’s learned over the course of an extensive career leading design for some of the largest and most consequential tech platforms ever created. She'll share thought-provoking, real-world examples of complex dilemmas and ways she and her team are developing to navigate them.

About Margaret Gould Stewart

Margaret Gould Stewart is Vice President of Product Design at Facebook. In addition to leading a global team of product designers and researchers for teams such as Artificial Intelligence, New Product Experimentation, and Workplace, she also oversees Facebook’s Responsible Innovation & Design Core Team, which is focused on integrating ethical foresight into the company’s overall product development process. The team is developing methods, tools and training that help teams understand how the products and technologies they build could affect people and society in both positive and negative ways, and to facilitate engagements with multi-disciplinary external communities to inform the process. Margaret has been a leader in the field of user experience design for over 20 years. Before joining Facebook, Margaret served as Director of User Experience at YouTube, overseeing the design of all YouTube’s products globally. Prior to that role, she managed Google’s Search and Consumer Products User Experience team.
