Where do I see myself in 5 years?I really hope that in 5 years I’m still not in the same place as I am today and that I have finally started my new chapter as a graphic designer. Though, what’s important to me as I reflect on my future is not only becoming a designer but a designer that challenges social norms. A designer who gives back. A designer supporting designers. A mentor. Someone who can give advice and provide help. At the end of the day, I want to make a difference in the world. Not just in the design community.
I want to be able to be there for graduate students, even upcoming designers. I want to help shine a light on problems and issues that are happening in the industry but we are too afraid or not comfortable to talk about.
Whether it’s educating and talking about the problem of diversity and inclusivity especially, as a minority in an industry that is predominantly white males. To be able to talk about your mental health as a designer, not just the feeling burnt out. But the lack of self-worth, some designers feel. The discouragement they feel. It’s the stuff I’ve dealt with and struggled with. We need honesty and the cold hard truth about the stuff we don’t hear about. It’s simply reality. These are the things I wish I had known instead of internalizing it. To be able to have an open dialogue with someone. Things I wish I had the support for.
