Members create outstanding projects for 12 non-profits during RGD's fourth Designathon

On Saturday, March 2nd, 36 emerging designers and 12 seasoned design professionals gathered in various cities across the country to participate in RGD's fourth Designathon.

 

A 12-hour event where design students and recent grads, led by a senior professional, work on real-life design projects for non-profit organizations, the Designathon is an opportunity for participants to connect, network and get real-world experience while using their expertise to contribute to a meaningful cause.

 

Participating cities and host studios included Studio Wyse and Forge Media + Design (Toronto), Design de Plume (Sudbury), Banfield Agency (Ottawa), Form:Media (Dartmouth) and KWENCH (Victoria).

 

Below are the projects created by the Designathon teams.

 

Fred Victor

Team: Parth Agnani Student RGD; Jacqueline Simpson Student RGD; Christie Wong Provisional RGD

Mentor: Nicola Hamilton RGD

Location: Studio Wyse, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a sub-brand that can be utilized on everything from signage to advertising to informational collateral.

Results:

A rolling gif of designs created for Fred Victor, a homeless support initiative in Toronto.

 

Lung Association - Ontario

Team: Megan Drummond Student RGD; Aaron Jake Inocencio Student RGD; Karina Rosales Student RGD

Mentor: Vincent Galante RGD

Location: Studio Wyse, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a visual identity for their new Lung Foundation. The brief asked for the new identity to tie into their existing identity for the Association.

Rise Asset Development

Team: Olga Filimonova Provisional RGD; Jeremy King Student RGD

Mentor: Norm Lourenco RGD

Location: Studio Wyse, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for the creation of two Save the Dates: one for their Annual Signature Event and a new home cultivation event.

Results:

Black Youth Commission

Team: Jorge Sanchez Ortiz de Galisteo Provisional RGD; Ashley Tomlinson Student RGD; Vicky Tong Student RGD

Mentor: David Nuff RGD

Location: Forge Media + Design, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a new logo that would be used to create a professional image identity, build the brand and improve recognizability.

Ontario Society for Environmental Education (OSEE)

Team: Oscar Aldana Student RGD; Elyssa Biringer Student RGD; Rachel Hwang Provisional RGD

Mentor: Saskia Van Kampen RGD

Location: Forge Media + Design, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a reinvention of the OSEE brand.

S.E.E.D.S

Team: Vicky Gibson Provisional RGD; Ethan Lewis Student RGD

Mentor: Tomomi Lo RGD

Location: Forge Media + Design, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a design to go on a permanent container in front of their Bed & Breakfast. The brief also asked for the design to be transferable to social media and online collateral.

A rolling GIF of assets created for SEEDS. Assets include a design for a storage container.

 

360°kids

Team: Jack Henry Provisional RGD; Sarah Lacasse Student RGD; Emily Varley Student RGD

Mentor: Michael J. Young RGD

Location: Forge Media + Design, Toronto

Brief: The brief asked for a new informational brochure.

Northern Initiative for Social Action (NISA)

Team: Alison Dawson Student RGD; Davide Dorigo Student RGD; Madison Lemieux Student RGD

Mentor: Meggan Van Harten RGD

Location: Design de Plume, Sudbury

Brief: The brief asked for a revamp of the magazine layout for Open Minds Quarterly.

Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival

Team: Melanie Gagne Student RGD; Emmanuel Medeiros Student RGD; Alexandre Venne Student RGD

Mentor: Melissa Deschenes RGD

Location: Design de Plume, Sudbury

Brief: The brief asked for a design concept for the 2019 festival, to be used on posters, the program and social media.

Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa

Location: Banfield Agency, Ottawa

Brief: The brief asked for the design of a sponsorship package for their 2019 Steel Toes and Stilettos Gala fundraiser.

Dine to Donate

Team: Alyssa Crowder Student RGD; Teigan Mudle Student RGD; Joe Thoong Student RGD

Location: KWENCH, Victoria

Brief: The brief asked for the creation of table placemats as well as swag to be sold on their foundation's website.

Amici Camping Charity

Mentor: John deWolf RGD

Brief: The brief asked for a refreshed logo that would allow them to better position themselves as a professional, current and relevant charity.
