Every other year, RGD invites submissions of graphic design projects from around the world done under the theme of communication design for social good; work with the power to incite action and make meaningful change in the way we live our lives. We are now accepting entries for our 2018 Awards.Future By Design is a series of webcast discussions featuring experts sharing their thoughts on a variety of topics. As a virtual event, we invite cities across Canada to host local screening venues where members of the community can gather to watch panelists’ presentations, conduct their own group discussions and participate in the live Q&A.
RGD’s In-House Design Awards launched in 2016 to recognize the best design work produced by internal creatives in Canada. For this program, we invite designers working within companies, associations, government and other organizations to submit work to compete against peers and help RGD demonstrate the value and effectiveness of in-house designers. The Program will re-launch in 2019.
Accessible from anywhere in North America, RGD hosted 40 professional development webinars in 2017, free for RGD Members. These live, lunch-time sessions will continue to cover industry trends, business best practices and insights into the creative process in 2018.
Read. Discuss. Learn. RGD’s Book Club is a way to develop your design knowledge and learn new skills through reading and group discussion. The group reads one book about every 6 weeks. The book list, reading schedule and virtual conversation are organized through Facebook with in-person and virtual meet-ups to allow for discussion on each of the selected books. Ross Chandler, Affiliate Member of RGD, VancouverRoss is a graphic designer and creative director at Ross Chandler Creative Projects. His studio creates compelling and relevant strategic brands, identities, campaigns, product packaging and interiors. A graduate of OCAD, Ross spent the early years of his career at leading Canadian design studios Hambly & Woolley (Toronto) and Subplot Design (Vancouver).Nicole Duncan RGD, KingstonNicole is an Art Director and Graphic Designer with 10 years experience in a range of areas in the industry. She collaborates with clients and agencies on original, persuasive and intelligent solutions that connect to consumers. Projects include corporate identities, packaging, web design, point-of-sale and printed collateral. Clients include Syngenta Canada, Vincor Canada and National Bank.
Ruth Farrugia RGD, Montreal
Ruth is an in-house designer working at Ville de / City of Côte Saint-Luc with over 10 years experience. She is also the owner, Fishtank Communications. She brings her passion and expertise to every client’s project, be it big or small. Her varied client list has allowed her to work on many different types of visual communications and she’s always up for a new challenge.
Phil Mondor RGD, Kitchener
Phil is Partner & Creative Director at Studio Locale, a design-driven boutique branding agency. The firm’s goal is to tell the story of its clients to the world using strategic communications and design.
Nico Taus RGD, Sudbury
Nico is Creative Director at Studio123, whose clients include the Rainbow District School Board, Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture, Centric Mining Systems, Laurentian University, the Social Planning Council of Sudbury, L’Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario and le Carrefour francophone de Sudbury. Previously Nico co-founded Bureau and guided its creative direction from 2009 to 2014. Nico is a founding member of the Sudbury Design Society.

RGD’s Programs Committee was established in 2015 to provide insights on RGD programs and events and to encourage grassroots Member activity. In short, we are here to ensure RGD is providing relevant, meaningful, accessible opportunities for networking, professional development and community building.
Programs that the Committee has been assisting with include RGD’s In-House Design Awards, webinars, our Creative Directions Conference, our Future By Design Panel Series and DesignThinkers.
In 2016, RGD took a year off from the Social Good Design Awards to launch an In- House Design Awards to celebrate design effectiveness by internal creative agencies. We received over 250 submissions from in-house designers across Canada, and the projects were judged by 19 in-house creative directors and design managers. RGD announced the 42 winning projects at an Awards Ceremony as part of DesignThinkers, with 103 guests in attendance. Due to the Program’s success, we decided to move forward with the program again in 2017. The Call for entries is now open up on May 1st with a final deadline of June 23rd.
RGD hosted 40 free professional development webinars for Members in 2016. RGD’s Webinar Program fulfils RGD’s goal of raising professional standards and keeping Members current on the latest industry best practices. This past year we added panel discussions, particularly ones focused on the challenges facing In- House designers and educators and business owners. We also use the Webinar Program as a sort of audition for prospective DesignThinkers Speakers. We are always looking for new webinar content, whether it be topics or speakers, so please let me know if you are interested or have ideas.
In 2016, RGD’s Virtual Panel Series Future By Design extended its offering with events taking place in the Pacific Time Zone. For Future By Design, venues across Canada are able to host local screenings of our panelists’ presentations, conduct their own group discussions and participate in the live Q&A. In the past year, Future by Design East screened four times at venues in Barrie, Burlington, Halifax, Kingston, Kitchener, London, Montreal, North Bay, Ottawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay, Toronto and Welland. Future by Design West screened three times in Regina, Nanaimo and Vancouver. The panels covered the topics of The Future of Book Design, The Future of Design Tools, The Future of Content and The Future Designer. The most recent Future by Design panel, the Future of Experience Design, was April 26th.
With 2,100 participants over four days of activities, the 17th annual DesignThinkers Conference was the largest gathering of creative professionals RGD has ever hosted. In 2017, with the help of the Committee, RGD will host two DesignThinkers Conferences with the addition of DesignThinkers Vancouver in May. This will be the first DesignThinkers hosted outside of Toronto. As Stussy mentioned, DesignThinkers will be back in Toronto on November 21st and 22nd. The Committee is helping with identifying the speaker line-up as well as programming additional events to support networking among members.
The Committee has also assisted and advised RGD on local event funding requests allowing Members to request funding and operational assistance for events they would like to organize for designers in their community.
I would like to thank all of our Committee Members for their work over our first year. They are of course our Chair Jesse Gibb, as well as Ross Chandler Affiliate Member, Ruth Farrugia RGD, Phil Mondor RGD, Stussy Tschudin RGD, Nico Taus RGD and Nicole Duncan RGD who recently joined the Committee.
