This year, the SDS Builders Award recognizes Karen Haynes RGD, a Sudbury-based graphic designer with over two decades of experience.
"It's a good feeling to think I played even a small part in growing the design industry in this community," Karen says. "It has grown from a handful of designers in the 80's to a group large enough to actually start their own society. When I started I was usually the only woman in the room, now everyone plays on an even playing field, and I think printers no longer see designers as a hindrance between them and the clients. To be acknowledged now by professionals who were once past employees, well, how cool is that?"
Also recognized this year is renowned Sudbury architect John Stefura. Past recipients include Réal Fortin, RGD Emeritus, who founded local marketing firm 50 Carleton, and Rick Cooper, a former copywriting professor at Cambrian College.
“The SDS Builders’ Award was created to honour the contributions of individuals in our community who have positively propelled the design profession in Sudbury,” says SDS President, Frank Chartrand RGD “This award continues to fulfill the SDS’ mandate of promoting the importance of design in our community.”
Karen and John will receive their awards at the SD--A Gala and Awards Night on May 23. This event will also include an exhibit featuring the work of other local creatives, displaying entries from this year's SD--A competition. For more information, click here.
