The rise of social media, written communication via the web and digital publishing have coincided with the trend towards handwritten fonts, flat design and vintage lettering. How will technological advances continue to shape typography and type design? What are iconic fonts and glyphicons and what other type innovations are on the horizon? How will market forces impact the economic viability of a career in type design?

Paddy Harrington RGD, founder of Frontier











Paddy has over 10 years experience in branding, strategy and design. He has degrees in literature and architecture and has worked in research, architecture, advertising, and design. His clients have included The New York Jets and Giants, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Unilever, the Holy City of Mecca and the Fogo Island Inn in Newfoundland. He is an award-winning writer and filmmaker and has spoken at several design conferences as well as at Brown, Harvard and the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Paddy was SVP Design Innovation and Digital Creative Director at Indigo Books and, prior to that, Executive Creative Director at Bruce Mau Design.



Jessica Hische

Jessica is a lettering artist, illustrator, author and self-described “avid internetter” working in San Francisco and Brooklyn. After graduating with a degree in Graphic and Interactive Design from Tyler School of Art (Temple University) in 2006, she worked for Headcase Design in Philadelphia before taking a position as Senior Designer at Louise Fili Ltd. In 2009, after two and a half years, Jessica left to further her freelance career and embark on several fun personal projects. Jessica began Daily Drop Cap, a project in which every day she created a new illustrative letter, working through the alphabet a total of twelve times. She’s created several educational micro-sites including Mom This is How Twitter Works, Should I Work for Free? and Don’t Fear the Internet (a collaborative project with Russ Maschmeyer).

Ellen Lupton

Ellen is Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and Director of the Graphic Design MFA Program at MICA, where she also serves as Director of the Center for Design Thinking. She is the author, co-author or editor of 13 books, including Thinking with Type and D.I.Y.: Design It Yourself. She has received many awards, including the Chrysler Design Award and AIGA Gold Medal.

Nick Sherman

Nick is a typographer and typographic consultant based in NYC. He is a co-founder of Fonts In Use and a columnist at A List Apart. He serves on the board of directors for the Type Directors Club, the Adobe Typography Customer Advisory Board, as well as the artistic board for the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum. He is both a graduate of and consultant for the Type@Cooper typeface design program at Cooper Union. Nick has worked at Font BureauWebtype, and MyFonts, directing web design and promotional material for typefaces in print and digital media. He graduated with honours from the Graphic Design program at MassArt in Boston, where he also taught undergraduate typography and letterpress printing.

Laura Worthington

After working as a graphic designer, Laura turned her lifelong fascination with lettering and typography into a business, publishing her first typeface in 2010. She has since published more than 80 typefaces. Her faces are based on her own hand-lettering and calligraphy, a practice she continues to hone daily. Laura was a pioneer in the practice of producing families of different display styles that work together to evoke a particular aesthetic — such as Charcuterie, which features 10 distinctive faces inspired by artisanal French food packaging. Her type designs have received awards from Communication Arts and Typographica, and MyFonts featured her faces in their “best of the year” lists for 6 years in a row. She has designed custom typefaces and worked with Fortune 500 companies including Microsoft, Starbucks and J.M. Smucker.
