Senior Designer, Concepts - Visual Image and Merchandising - Toronto

Creative Niche’s recruitment team is working with a luxury retailer in Toronto to help them find a Senior Designer focused on visual image and merchandising to join their team full-time.


In this position you will work closely with the Director of Visual Image and the Director of Visual Merchandising to interface between both teams to ensure key deliverables for visual merchandising projects are delivered on brand, on schedule and on budget to achieve maximum sales and profitability.


Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Together with Director, Visual Image, conceptualize and display in-store settings, decorations and signage, leveraging architectural features of stores
  • Assist in the visualization of store concepts, windows and events
  • Assist in the design and development of window schemes and in store features
  • Draw 2D and 3D models, and create visualizations and renders, using artistic skills and computer-aided design (CAD) programs
  • Manage a centralized visual image and merchandising calendar by communicating with respective departments
  • Develop status reports detailing progress of key milestones, including project kickoff, concept development, creative reviews, prototype reviews, final approvals, delivery
  • Proactively identify any project challenges and helps to resolve the issue directly with cross-functional team members
  • Ensure the planned action for in-store projects and activities are delivered on time and in budget
  • Seek feedback from colleagues and customers on the visual impact of displays and implementing changes
  • Assist in the tracking and managing the visual image department budget
  • Conduct research on current and future trends in design and lifestyle, and associated target market features
  • Conduct research on other retailers' visual merchandising concepts
  • Provide input to visual merchandising team to create visual merchandising packs to communicate visual concept and guidelines
  • Process all visual image invoices from vendors and submit to Accounts Payable
  • Comply with all Health & Safety policies and requirements



  • Post-secondary degree in Design, Visual Merchandising, Interior Design, Graphic Design or related field or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 7 years of post-university work experience, including 5 years’ project management experience in retail or agency (visual merchandising project management experience is a plus)
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant working experience in high volume retail or commercial interior graphic design business or visual display
  • Strong understanding of visual merchandising and retail requirements
  • Solid organizational skills, detail-oriented; time management skills, ability to juggle priorities
  • Highly service-oriented with exceptional organizational and follow up skills
  • Experience breaking down complex ideas into manageable tasks
  • Demonstrated leadership and influencing skills with the ability to get things done
  • A team player who is able to act as both a leader and an individual contributor as required
  • Confident and effective communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a very fast paced environment and meet very tight deadlines Is adaptable and comfortable with ambiguity and change
  • Passionate about fashion, luxury retailing and customer experience
  • Able to produce layout plan, sketch and freehand perspective drawings
  • Must be proficient with AutoCAD or other 3D rendering program
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photo editing Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
