RGD is thrilled to announce that DesignThinkers Toronto 2018 delegates raised $5,099 for North York Women's Shelter, the Conference's first-ever official charity.

Delegates' donations were put towards the building of a new, state-of-the-art centre that provides shelter, safety and drop-in services to hundreds of women, children and their pets from across Toronto who are impacted by violence in their homes.

Paddy Harrington RGD, Founder of Frontier, initially put RGD in touch with North York Women's Shelter. "What excited me most about the project," says Paddy, "was the fact that it was by a fundamentally important organization whose approach to the new facility included design as a functional method for making the best possible experience for those who use it."

"It was such an honour for us to be chosen as the official charity for the 2018 DesignThinkers Toronto Conference," adds Mohini Datta-Ray, Executive Director at North York Women’s Shelter. "In total, your generous group donated $5,099 towards construction, interior finishes (e.g. lighting, bathrooms) and furnishings (e.g. beds, storage cupboards, bedside tables, cribs, sheets and towels) for one of the 17 new bedrooms with private baths being built in the emergency residence."

RGD extends a special thank you to Forge Media + Design and MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects - (MJMA) for donating $500+ each to NYWS.

Since DesignThinkers Toronto, North York Women's Shelter has made tremendous progress on both the construction of the new centre and on their fundraising campaign. Due to winter weather-related delays, they will be ready to start providing refuge to women and children fleeing violence in late 2019.

North York Women's Shelter actively supports the rights of women and children to build lives free of violence by providing non-judgemental safe shelter, advocacy, and a range of programs & services including 24-hour crisis support. Since opening its doors in 1984, North York Women’s Shelter has provided a place of safety and support for women and children impacted by violence. In the 33 years since NYWS’s inception, over 11,000 residents have stayed at the shelter – determined to build lives free of violence and abuse.

Looking forward: DesignThinkers Toronto 2019
